Google Photos Storage Full? What's Using It and What to Do (2026)

Why your Google storage is full, what counts and what doesn't, how to free space without losing photos, and when a copy on your own disk makes more sense than a bigger plan.

Updated

When Google says your storage is full, Google Photos stops backing up new photos. And because the space is shared, Gmail can stop receiving mail too. Before you pay for a bigger plan, it’s worth knowing what’s actually using it.

What counts toward your storage

Your free 15 GB are shared by Google Photos, Gmail and Google Drive. Your Google account’s storage page, or the Google One app, shows how it’s split. The problem isn’t always the photos.

What doesn’t count: photos and videos uploaded in “High quality” (now “Storage saver”) before 1 June 2021. Those are free forever. That’s why the number Google Photos shows can be much smaller than your library: mine said 12.5 GB, and exporting everything gave me 344 GB.

Free up space without losing anything

  • Delete the big stuff first. Google Photos’ storage management shows your largest items: usually a few long videos, screenshots, blurry shots.
  • Empty the trash. Deleted items keep using space until the trash empties.
  • Convert to Storage saver. Google can recompress what you already uploaded to free space. It’s a one-way trip: the originals are replaced by smaller copies. Only do it if you have the originals somewhere else.
  • Stop backing up folders you don’t need. WhatsApp, screenshots, downloads.
  • Clean Gmail and Drive. Old attachments add up.

Or keep a copy you own

The other option is to stop asking Google to be the only place your photos live. Download a full copy to a disk you own, and then decide calmly what to keep on Google, what to convert, what to delete, without the risk of losing the only copy.

Getting the whole library out is done with Google Takeout: how it works, and how to put it on an external hard drive. By hand it’s slower than it should be: here’s what happened when I did it.

The usual shortcuts each cost something. Routing the export through Google Drive and rclone needs Drive space as big as the export, which is the very thing you’re short of. A browser extension skips Takeout but breaks when Google changes the site. Homewend is what I built for this: you sign in, press one button, and it gets the export onto your disk, resumes what breaks and checks every file against what Google exported. Then you can free space on Google knowing what you have at home.

FAQ

What happens when Google Photos storage is full? New photos and videos stop backing up. Gmail may stop receiving mail, and you can’t add files to Drive.

Does deleting from Google Photos delete from my phone? If the phone syncs with Google Photos, deleting in Google Photos can delete it on the phone too. Check before deleting in bulk.

Is buying more storage the only option? No. You can free space, or keep a copy of your photos on your own disk and decide what stays on Google.
